Learn MoreLessons from the front: how a food addict lost 250 pounds
Jamie Morgan Reno
Jamie Morgan Reno is a lifelong, severe processed food addict cursed with a slow metabolism, who, in 2008, lost 250lbs without surgery or pills. Though she sustained a new lease on her body, life and health, she soon found herself trapped in a food prison created by the processed foods and animal products the SAD (standard American diet) industry told her she could, and should, have.
Sick of the professional, societal and familial pressures that came with trying to moderate processed foods while fighting to maintain her newfound health, Jamie finally found food freedom through education and acceptance of processed foods’ effects on her body, mind and spirit. A processed food addict in recovery since 2017, Jamie’s soul led her exactly where she needed to go. Leveraging the research of Drs. Joan Ifland, and Vera Tarman and via Chef AJ’s influence, she quickly found a WFPB and SOFA-free lifestyle that has completely freed her from her addiction. Now, a total of 250lbs lighter, Jamie’s mental and physical health (and her metabolism) have recovered from the numerous negative and life-long effects of processed foods.
A passionate advocate for education and recovery from this insidious condition, Jamie speaks to and works with communities of recovering processed food addicts to share her lessons, tools and resources on how to navigate recovery while living in this disease-promoting, processed food-filled world. She loves to hear the real stories, real struggles and real heartache of other processed food addicts, knowing she also gets to witness their real recovery, too. Jamie is creating a YouTube community that explores how this devastating condition affects every aspect of our lives, bodies, psyches and spirits, and how to recover from it, one choice at a time. She encourages others to rise with her as she uncovers, celebrates and shares what it takes to overcome this life-altering addiction, for real.

Dr. Herman Pontzer
Herman Pontzer, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology and Research Associate Professor of Global Health at Duke University, investigates how our species’ evolutionary past shapes our lives today. His team conducted the first measurements of daily energy expenditure in traditional hunter-gatherers and in non-human apes, with findings that have challenged the way we think about diet, exercise, metabolism, and health. Dr. Pontzer’s new book, Burn: New Research Blows the Lid Off How We Really Burn Calories, Lose Weight, and Stay Healthy, published in March, 2021.
We burn 2,000 calories a day. And if we exercise and cut carbs, we’ll lose more weight. Right? Wrong. In this paradigm-shifting book, Herman Pontzer reveals for the first time how human metabolism really works so that we can finally manage our weight and improve our health.
Pontzer’s groundbreaking studies with hunter-gatherer tribes show how exercise doesn’t increase our metabolism. Instead, we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level. This was a brilliant evolutionary strategy to survive in times of famine. Now it seems to doom us to obesity. The good news is we can lose weight, but we need to cut calories. Refuting such weight-loss hype as paleo, keto, anti-gluten, anti-grain, and even vegan, Pontzer discusses how all diets succeed or fail: For shedding pounds, a calorie is a calorie.
At the same time, we must exercise to keep our body systems and signals functioning optimally, even if it won’t make us thinner. Hunter-gatherers like the Hadza move about five hours a day and remain remarkably healthy into old age. But elite athletes can push the body too far, burning calories faster than their bodies can take them in. It may be that the most spectacular athletic feats are the result not just of great training, but of an astonishingly efficient digestive system.
Revealing, irreverent, and always entertaining, Pontzer has written a book that will change how you eat, move, and live.
Herman Pontzer
Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology and Global Health
How did the human body evolve, and how does our species’ deep past shape our health and physiology today? Through lab and field research, Dr. Pontzer investigates the physiology of humans and other primates to understand how ecology, lifestyle, diet, and evolutionary history affect metabolism and health. He is particularly interested in cardiometabolic disease and the lifestyle factors that protect against obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other noncommunicable diseases that are common among industrialized populations but rare or absent in non-industrialized societies.
Dr. Pontzer’s field projects seek to understand how diet, activity and other ecological factors influence the physiology and health of people in small-scale societies, including hunter-gatherers and subsistence farmers in east Africa and South America. Back at Duke, his lab research focuses on energetics and metabolism, including respirometry and doubly labeled water methods.

Chuck Carroll
Chuck Carroll is host of the Physicians Committee’s popular “The Exam Room” podcast and known widely as The Weight Loss Champion, a name given to him by an NFL player for losing an incredible 275 pounds.
At just 5 feet 6 inches tall, Chuck weighed 420 pounds and had a 66-inch waist before radically changing his life.
Before that, like so many others, he tried and failed countless times to lose weight. Any success he achieved was short-lived as the weight came pouring back on and then some. At his heaviest, he was eating 10,000 calories every day.
Out of desperation, he decided to have weight loss surgery in 2009. Prior to the procedure he was convinced that it would become like all the other failed attempts to lose weight. Chuck was just 27 years old at the time and didn’t believe he would live to see 30. He thought at least he would go to his grave saying he tried everything.
But then the unexpected happened. He woke up from the surgery and never looked back.
Although a critical component, the procedure proved only to be the first step in his journey. In fact, he only attributes 10 percent of his long-term weight loss success to it. The rest he credits to a plant-based diet and changing his lifestyle!
By adopting a plant-based diet, he is no longer afraid of regaining the weight as he had so many times before — no more yo-yo dieting! He is thrilled that he is lowering his risk of cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease, both of which run rampant in his family. As a bonus, he is no longer spending massive amounts of money on medical expenses because of his optimum health!
The confidence he gained from the weight loss enabled him to pursue his dream of becoming a reporter where he covered sports and news for CBS and later NBC News Radio. He was also previously featured in PCRM’s Teaming Up 4 Health campaign where he had the opportunity to speak on Capitol Hill and share his remarkable journey.
Now he is delighted to be bringing his passion and talents to the Physicians Committee as host of The Exam Room and to show others that the impossible is possible — you can get healthy!
This summit is for you if:
Why this is so urgent
Obesity is linked to 13 different types of cancer
In 2017 health officials reported that there is a link between obesity and 40 percent of all the cancers diagnosed in the United States. The 13 cancers include brain, breast, thyroid, stomach, liver, pancreas, kidney, ovaries, uterus and colon cancers the researchers said. (during the summit you'll learn exactly how to lose weight AND protect your health at the same time!)
Type 2 diabetes
Obesity is believed to account for 80-85% of the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Obese people are up to 80 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those with a BMI of less than 22. (the good news is that your body starts healing the moment you start losing weight the right way)
Heart disease
Heart disease is the number one killer in the US and multiple large-scale studies have shown that "Obesity is among the leading causes of elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and morbidity." (did you know that the fat tissue itself releases inflammatory molecules that can induce cardiac dysfunction and promote plaque?)
Risk of stroke
Studies have shown that for each one-unit increase in BMI there is a 4% increase in the risk of ischemic stroke and a 6% increase for hemorrhagic stroke. That means just 20 pounds overweight increase the risk of stroke by 24%.
Depression and Dementia
People who were obese had a 55 percent greater risk of developing depression throughout their lives. But that's just the start: We now know that the brain is significantly impacted by the inflammatory state of obesity. As a consequence overweight is now recognized as a factor in dementia and cognitive function. (that's why losing weight is so vital - not just to feel great today, but to give yourself a chance to feel great in your golden years)
Processed food
60% of calories consumed in America come from highly processed foods. And only 5% of Americans get enough fiber. Fiber not only helps to manage a healthy weight, fiber is linked to reduced risks of developing various conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and constipation. (did you know that fiber helps with healthy cholesterol level, regular bowel movements and detox as well?)
Stress

Your host
Chef AJ
As a chef Chef AJ gained weight over the years despite being a vegan. Disappointed that standard diets and your typical approaches didn't work she resigned to the "fact" that that's just the way she'd be for the rest of her life...
All this changed when she started cooking at True North Health Center. There she discovered the secrets to natural weight loss and has lost over 50 pounds - and kept them off for years. Today she is determined to live at least 100 and is proud to say that her IQ is higher than her cholesterol.
Chef AJ holds a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell University, is the host of the TV series Healthy Living, has made appearances on shows with Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, David Letterman and more. She is the author of the popular book Unprocessed: How to Achieve Vibrant Health and Your Ideal Weight, which chronicles her journey from an obese junk-food vegan faced with a diagnosis of pre-cancerous polyps, to learning how to create foods that nourish and heal the body. Her latest bestselling book The Secrets to Ultimate Weight Loss has received glowing endorsements by many doctors and dietitians. She runs live seminars, a weight loss program and YouTube shows which have helped hundreds achieve the health and body they deserve. And she has become famous for making sugar, oil, salt and gluten-free desserts that are just as delicious as their sinful counterparts...
